The Audrey I ensemble is a sweet pink confection, inspired by the frilly feminine nonsense of the Rococo era. I wanted to capture the aura of Audrey I in her dream sequence, dancing happily around her cosy home, watering her flowers in her window box, gazing fondly at her loving nuclear family. Audrey yearns for the American dream, “a picture from Better Homes and Garden Magazine”.
I was inspired by the way Audrey imagines herself in her dreams, wearing frothy pastel mid-century dresses with the classic curvaceous hourglass silhouette of the era. I took this to the extreme by using the drastically exaggerated lines of 18th-century French aristocracy, with swathes of fabric and a dramatically full Watteau pleat to the back. I experimented with creating my version of the iconic fluffy fly fringe, seen on many a Robe a la Française. I used saturated pastel colours reminiscent of those in the dream-like scene “Somewhere that’s Green”.
Audrey II’s ensemble is imposing, with the padded fly traps exaggerating a bulb-like silhouette – he is a carnivorous plant come to life after all! Audrey II is hell-bent on World Domination, achieved through seduction, manipulation, magic and murder..
This costume nods to his arrogance and perceived superiority through scale and visual impact. Plant-like shapes hint at his true form, and the green and pink are reminiscent of the Venus Flytrap. With a personality not unlike Henry VIII, I chose to reference features of Tudor costume, the slash and puff details worked perfectly to give the ensemble presence and flamboyance.
